2.10 Radio Failure Procedures

2.10.1 On IVAO, we could consider a Team Speak breakdown as a radio failure. However, you should be able to contact the controller on text mode via IvAp on the ATC frequency or with the .msg command. But if for any reason, both voice and text modes are inoperative, here is what you can do.

PILOT PROCEDURES

2.10.2 As follows:

  • Squawk 7600
  • Try to fix your problem (connection, voice software) and advise the controller when the situation is back to normal.
  • VMC:
    • Continue VMC
    • Land at nearest suitable aerodrome.
  • IMC:
    • Departure (RADAR control)
      • Proceed according to the ATC clearance. Where the clearance contains a level lower than the one specified in the flight plan, and no time limit or geographical limit was stipulated in the clearance, the pilot will maintain this cleared level for a period of 3 minutes (terrain permitting) and then continue to climb to the level specified in the flight plan.

Note: A flight being vectored by radar away from the required route will proceed in the most direct manner to the flight planned route as soon as two-way radio communication is lost.

      • Decide to return to departure field or continue as per FPL.
      • If returning see Arrival, otherwise if under RADAR departure turn onto FPL route and climb to last assigned level.
      • SID: See SID chart
    • Enroute
      • Proceed according to your FPL to the appropriate designated navigational aid serving the aerodrome of intended landing and hold over this aid until commencement of descent. Where ATC clearance has been received and acknowledged, the aircraft will proceed to the clearance limit specified, to hold at the cleared flight level until commencement of descent or until expiry of the OCT where en-route holding has been required.
    • Arrival
      • Commence descent from the designated navigational aid at, or as close as possible to, the EAT last received and acknowledged; or if no EAT has been received and acknowledged, at, or as close as possible to the ETA as indicated on the FPL and revised in accordance with the current flight plan, plus ten (10) minutes, i.e. ETA plus 10 minutes.
      • STAR: See STAR chart
        • Complete full instrument letdown and arrive within 30min of the above time.
          1. Complete a normal instrument approach procedure.
          2. Land, if possible, within 30 minutes after commencing descent.

ATC PROCEDURES

2.10.3 After attempts to establish or re-establish communications have failed, controllers are to carry out the following standard radio failure procedure:

  1. Maintain separation between the radio failure aircraft and other controlled traffic. Radar is to be used to assist.
  2. Give pertinent information about the movements of the radio failure aircraft to other aircraft in the presumed vicinity.
  3. Transmit on the appropriate frequencies:-
    1. level, route and EAT (or ETA) to which the radio failure aircraft is assumed to be adhering; and
    2. the weather conditions at the destination aerodrome, a suitable alternate and, if practicable, in areas suitable for the descent through cloud.
