3.5 – DEPARTURE SEPARATION

3.5.1 The following describes the time-based separation used between successive departing flights.

3.5.2 These time intervals between departure times prevent the following:

  1. aircraft of different operating speeds causing a loss of separation due to a faster aircraft departed right after a slower aircraft.
  2. The 2nd aircraft to enter any possible (simulated) wake turbulence left behind by the aircraft ahead.

3.5.3 It works as follows:

Same departure track (E.g. SID)
Same runway length departure
Light behind Medium or Heavy/Super 3min
Medium or Heavy/Super behind Light 5min
All other combination aircraft types 2min
Intersection departure for 2nd aircraft Add 1min to above timing
Departure track diverging by at least 45º All aircraft type combinations 1min
